Q: How old do you have to be to rent a car in New York?
My friend and I are planning on going to New York, and want to rent a car. What is the minimum age you can rent a car at in NY?
A: At least 21, but most rental car companies will say 25. Check their websites.
Q: Can I register a Utah car in the state I am a resident of while a student in New York?
I am a Hawaii resident, who is in school in New York, with a car I bought and registered for a year while at school in Utah. Is it possible to register my car in Hawaii if I don't plan to return to Utah or stay much longer in New York?
A: You may have to take your car to the state that you register it in. I know that even to renew registration in California, you have to take your car back to California for the proper inspections. So, from my experience (with a permanent address in a different state than my car registration) it's easiest to register your car where you are at. If they require proof of residency, most states accept bills or bank/credit card statements, or a copy of your lease.
Q: Can i sell my car in California with New York State Registration and Plates?
I move from New York to California San Jose and i transported my car. I want to sell the car now. I have not done my registration in California. It still has New York State's registration. Can i sell the car with New York State registration in California?
A: Yes. The only thing you need to verify is the CA emissions testing requirement for an out of state vehicle. I believe you will need to have the vehicle tested for emissions before you can sell it for registration in CA. Check the state DMV site for specifics.
Q: What is involved in importing my car into New York from Ontario?
Hi,
I will be moving to New York permanently from Ontario and would like to know what is involved in importing my car into New York State from Canada. My car is a Canadian model Honda Civic.
Thanks,
George
A: You need to obtain a letter from Honda stating that your car was manufactured to meet all US safety and emissions standards. The letter should state your VIN. If it doesn't meet the standards, and many don't because Canadian and US standards are different, the car must be brought into compliance or you must dispose of it within one year (returned to Canada not junked). Ownership documentation and customs declaration form at the border. It also must pass the New York safety and emissions test.
If you call your dealer I suspect they can get the documentation for you. They probably have done it before.

Q: How much do you think my first year of insurance would cost with a v8 engine as my first car in new york?
If i am 16 how much (average) would my first year of car insurance in New York cost if i get an 8 cylinder 5 speed car?
A: Hello new driver :)
If you are a young driver attempting to find cheap and affordable car insurance you are probably already aware of the challenge that lies ahead. The statistics about teenage drivers aren’t good. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 16-year-olds get into accidents almost six times more often than drivers between the age of 30 and 59. No wonder car insurance premiums are so high for this age group. It has always been difficult if you are aged between of 16 - 25 to insure your car affordably, and although car insurance companies are beginning to recognize the need to supply this ever expanding market, it can still prove to be hard to find a reasonably priced car insurance premium.
For instance, young drivers will often own older or less maintained vehicle compared to other drivers, which means they are more likely to break down and potentially cause an accident. Teenage drivers are also more likely to have accidents which can either injure themselves or the other party.
However, parents should be aware if the fact that there are several ways that can help lower car insurance costs for your teen. In order for teen drivers and car insurance to work well together, parents need to know the factors that will help contribute to paying less for their son or daughter’s auto insurance in the future.
The first thing that insurance providers look into when giving a car insurance quote is the driving record of the person. Teenagers that have a good driving record may merit consideration. What that means is that you can help keep your teen focused on safe driving by having him or her pay a portion of the auto insurance premium. Also, be sure to let your teen know the consequences of getting traffic tickets.
Before you purchase your car it is also worth researching which insurance group it will fall in, so that you can ensure you will be able to get the cheapest possible insurance.
Finally, by using Insurance4lessdirect.com you can rest assured that we will strive to find you the cheapest car insurance premium that will provide you and your teenager with the best cover.
Did you know: If you’re adding your teen driver to your auto insurance policy, be sure to take advantage of the auto insurance discount for good students, available in many states.

Q: Is it still possible to drive in New York City? Are there any plans to close streets to cars?
A: Yes, you can still drive in NYC. There are always temporary street closings for one reason or another. There are plans to toll charge private cars entering below 86th St., but that is a long way off if it ever happens.
Contrary to the opinions of all the little old ladies who populate this forum, driving in Manhattan is not particularly difficult or dangerous -- as long as you are patient. It is parking that is terrible & that can be cured by paying $$.

Q: what is the cheapest way to travel across America by road from New York to LA ie which car etc hire company?
there are two of us and we are planning a world trip and are wanting to travel from New York to LA and need a cheap car hire company that will allow us to do this as cheap as possible. we don't mind camping so a car would be fine. oh n does anyone know how long it will take?
A: You might want to consider renting an RV. It will save you tons of money on hotel costs.
Here's a site that can help you estimate fuel costs for your trip: http://www.fuelcostcalculator.com/
I've heard this company was a good place to rent an RV from:
http://www.cruiseamerica.com/destinations/oneway-rv-rental.aspx
There's a number you can call (it's on the left side of the page in small lettering) for one-way rentals.
It's hard to say how long it will take. It depends on how often you stop, places you visit, how fast you drive, etc...
If you plan on making stops at lots of places for activities, sight seeing, etc, it might take you anywhere from 1.5 weeks to 1 month or more.
I would map out destinations you want to visit, and different cities that you want to stop in, and plan at least 1 day at the least for every stop/city just to allow ample time.
You can use mapquest to see estimated travel times.
If you take the shortest route from NY to LA, you're going to see a lot of nothing in between. You'll need to do some out-of-the-way driving to get to all the major cities, and attractions.
Make sure to visit places like The Grand Canyon, or YellowStone National Park!
Have fun!

Q: Will New York State pay my car insurance deductible if I hit a deer?
I recently had a deer hit my car and am going to have to pay a $500 deductible. My grandpa told my parents that when he hit a deer, New York State paid for all repairs including the deductible because deer are considered to be property of the state. His body shop took care of all the details. Does anyone know is this is still true or who I can contact to find out more information?
A: To my knowledge, you always pay the deductible. We also had an accident with a deer, yes the insurance company paid for repairs, but we were responsible for the deductible. I think your grandpa may be mistaken.
